Fine Structure

Welcome to Phase Space

Lee Smolin & friends have been thinking about space-time recently. You may remember Lee from two or three years ago when his book The Trouble with Physics came out which focused closely on the unpredictable nature of string theory.

New Scientist is now reporting that Lee & friends have made some predictions that take relativity to the next level. Specifically, four additional dimensions of something called momentum space exist in a very similar way to our four-dimensional space-time. The theory, though in its infancy, could lead to unification of the forces though its not without some very interesting implications.

Most interesting is a prediction - and existing data! - that suggests high energy photons will arrive over long distances before lower energy photos emitted from the same source at the same time.

Even the article is a bit dense at times but I hope to get a detailed, understandable analysis of the predictions up in the next couple of days. Stay tuned!
