Another Asteroid Almost Hits Earth

On November 6th, the generally empty space between the Earth and the Moon played host to an outside visitor for a brief period of time. Asteroid 2009 VA was spotted only 15 hours before it was to pass within two Earth radii of our planet.

Of course, it wouldn't have been the end of the world if 2009 VA had hit us; the space rock was only 7 meters in size and a similar size asteroid hits the Earth about once every five years. Chances of the asteroid making it all the way through the atmosphere without breaking up are pretty slim, not to mention that it would most likely be aimed at an area of Earth covered by water. ]
