Asteroid 2008 TC3
The Planetary Society wraps up the full story on the earth-impacting asteroid 2008 TC3. The short version: a ~2-meter asteroid was spotted 20 hours before an expected impact with the earth, a first in astronomy. Global collaboration allowed incredibly accurate trajectory estimates and it was determined that it would vaporize in the atmosphere somewhere over Sudan. Spoiler: no pictures of the actual burn up event.
